Well a lot of people are looking for the answer to this.
I hope for anyone coming here looking for the answer that this clears it up a bit.
What exactly do I get from XP mode on Windows 7?
On Windows XP o r Vista we used to use Virtual PC this has now been replaced on Windows 7 with XP Mode. Although really it should just be called Virtual PC still as it does allow you to run all previous operating systems and have a number of virtual PC running at once.
Why XP Mode?
I think Microsoft have attempted to bring virtualisation to the masses and have something called XP Mode tells you what you’re getting. It’s also a free fully licensed version of XP for people to use on Windows 7.
So how does it work now?
Once you have installed XP Mode it kind of looks like that’s what you get XP only! However if you open the first link under Virtual PC on your Start Menu named “Windows Virtual PC” without realising it you are now in the GUI of virtual PC. Gone is the small GUI window. Along the top you’ll see “Create Virtual Machine” and in this Window will eventually be a list of all your virtual operating systems.
How do I get my old VHD’s into this?
If you have previous virtual machines go to their folders and just click the vmc file (It’s the small file in the folder). This then automatically adds them to the virtual machine list, if you what to change setting you can right click them in the list and go to settings. Simple!
So why the confusion?
Calling it XP mode was not a good idea it really leads you to think you not really installed Virtual PC and then to top that make the GUI now look like a folder just confused things.
